Description

Scarce document signed by the English king who was crowned at the age of thirteen months

First Stuart King of England (1603 - 25), also King of Scots (1567 - 1625). On his mother’s forced abdication, he was proclaimed king, and brought up by several regents. When he began to govern for himself, he ruled through his favorites, which caused a rebellion and a period of imprisonment. On Elizabeth’s death, he ascended the English throne as great-grandson of James IV’s English wife, Margaret Tudor. At first well received, his favoritism again brought him unpopularity. British monarch (born 1566) who ruled as James VI of Scotland from 1567 and as King of Great Britain (the first ruler so designated) from 1603 until his death in 1625. During his reign as England’s first Stuart king, James authorized the well-known version of the Anglican Bible which came to bear his name and oversaw his country’s involvement in the Thirty Years’ War. Scarce manuscript DS, in Old English, signed “James R,” one page, 9.25 x 8, January 28, 1604. An untranslated document, apparently an order to deliver an embroidered coat of arms, signed in the top left corner by James I. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, some scattered light toning and foxing, and document inlaid to a slightly larger off-white sheet. The white paper seal is crisp and intact. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
