Description

Became King of England, King of Scots, and King of Ireland in 1685. He was the last Catholic monarch to reign over the Kingdom of England, Kingdom of Scotland, or Kingdom of Ireland. Some of his subjects distrusted his religious policies and alleged despotism, leading a group of them to depose him in the Glorious Revolution. ALS signed “J,” one page both sides, 7 x 9, August 2 [1682]. Letter to his niece, the Countess of Lichfield, the illegitimate daughter of Charles II. In part, “Went a hunting on Tuesday and came this day hither, and so could not answer it [letter] sooner. The Duchess will not now stir from hence till she is up again, but shall go often between this and Windsor. As for news, Madame la Dauphenne is brought to bed of a son which is no small joy to the King of France. Lady Eliz. Delanal is now a widow. Her husband died last night at Windsor. On Friday, I intend to wayte on his Ma: againe, and shall make use of this direction you dare not use in the condition you are now in. I am but just come to town, and so have no other news to tell you, and hope you will always do me the justice to believe that I shall always be your most humble servant.” Smaller integral second page bears an address panel addressed to “For my Niece the Countess of Lichfield,” with the red wax seal still present and intact. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, some scattered light staining, a few slight fold separations, tape along edge of integral address leaf, and a strip of light edge toning.
