Fabled queen of Louis XVI of France (1755–1793) whose public execution, along with that of her husband, was the most grisly, visible, and powerful symbol of the political aims of the French Revolution. Scarce manuscript DS, in French, signed “Payez, Marie Antoinette,” one page, 9.75 x 14.5, July 1, 1783. A Document ordering the payment for provisions for six officers. In part (tanslated): “[To] the Treasurer General of Our House of Finances, Monsieur Marc Antoine Francois Marie Randon de la Tour. We wish to tell you that from the monies which [are] funded by the State reserved for the maintenance in food for several of our officers during the present year, you [will] pay to the order of the six coachmen of our stables, serving by appointment, the sum of 547 livres-10 solds, which we have granted them as wages and for food during the quarter of April, May, and June.” Scattered toning to edges, with small tape repairs along left edge, and a moderate bisecting horizontal fold, otherwise fine condition.
