Description

Einstein finalizes a letter for his partner, friend and fellow Jewish activist Lionel Ettlinger

TLS in German, signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, February 3, 1937. Letter to Lionel Ettlinger. In full, “Enclosed the letter you asked for. Last paragraph has been changed in consideration of the dislike here to bombastic expressions.” Neatly signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by Einstein. Ettlinger, who had spent 80% of his personal wealth in finding safe havens for Jewish refugees, first approached Einstein in 1933 for assistance. It was Ettlinger’s hope that a central office could be formed in Geneva to assist Jews in resolving political questions and problems caused by Hitler. Although the office, which they hoped would be established under the League of Nations, never materialized, both Ettlinger and Einstein were able to help Jews both financially and through their worldwide connections. Accompanied by the original 1981 Charles Hamilton auction bill of sale. In fine condition, with horizontal and vertical mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature and a light shade of toning, mostly to edges. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
