Ettlinger, who had spent 80% of his personal wealth in finding safe havens for Jewish refugees, first approached Einstein in 1933 for assistance. It was Ettlinger’s hope that a central office could be formed in Geneva to assist Jews in resolving political questions and problems caused by Hitler. Although the office, which they hoped would be established under the League of Nations, never materialized, both Ettlinger and Einstein were able to help Jews both financially and through their worldwide connections.
