Wilson signs a check on the day of his famous “For the League of Nations speech

War Industries Board business check, 8.5 x 3.25, filled out in type and signed by Wilson as president, payable to Richard L. Rumbaugh for $1.00, September 6, 1919. Countersigned by influential financier and presidential advisor Bernard Baruch as Chairman of the War Industries Board. On the same day, in Des Moines, Iowa, Wilson delivered his famous “For the League of Nations” speech, which was ranked as one of the top 100 American speeches of the twentieth century in a 1999 poll of historians and other scholars.
