Description

Einstein foreshadows a timely controversy as he blasts a xenophobic “aid” organization: “It is certain that the committee founded in New York for exiled physicians is only concerned with preventing immigration and placement of them”

TLS in German, signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 10.5, July 19, 1934. Einstein writes to Dr. Erwin Beckhard. In full [translated]: “It is certain that the committee founded in New York for exiled physicians is only concerned with preventing immigration and placement of them. If you are able to make a sound and practical suggestion, I would certainly be most interested. However, as I am largely unfamiliar with the current situation at issue, I would not consider myself competent for evaluation. I suggest therefore, you describe your ideas in a letter, which I then will—provided you approve—discuss with a number of discreet and better informed friends.” At this point in his career, Einstein, who had just fled Germany, became a devoted activist on behalf of his European Jewish colleagues who sought to escape ever-intensifying persecution by the Nazis. In 1936, he used his winnings in a newspaper contest to establish a fund for German emigrants, and he personally aided scores of refugees throughout the remainder of the Nazi era and beyond. In fine condition, with expected mailing folds (one through single letter of signature), paperclip stain to top edge, and light scattered creasing. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
