ALS signed “W. F. Cody,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West letterhead, October 5, 1907. Cody writes to J. T. McCaddon, financial manager of the Wild West Show. In full (with grammar and spelling retained): “Mr. Hutchison showed me the contracts for the wintering of the Animals. I see Mr. Hutchisons and my suggestions. That was telegraphed you. How those contracts should have been made. As usual have been ignored. You mention some new man who will take charge of the W.W. stock—Does this man know how to handle Buffalo. does he know the Bucking horses and how to handle them? I see you still insist on ignoring and humiateing me in ever possible manner. Every man that handles the money of this Enterprise. Are employed by you. And you expect me to take their statements. And say nothing, McCaddon. I have worked for the success of this Enterprise this season. where my Doctors have said it would either kill or permanately injur me for life. And it has injured me for life. And I am rideing now where I should be in the hospital. And I am entitled to some considderation. I have had to accept statements for the time being that must be corrected. Cody & Bailey have paid for many things & mens wages last winter That they should no have been chaged with which must be corrected.” McCaddon came to control the purse strings of the Wild West Show through his association with James Bailey (of Barnum & Bailey fame), who held part interest in Cody’s legendary spectacle. By the time Cody wrote this letter, his role had largely been relegated to that of mere performer. Apart from the immediate concerns Cody mentions, his frustration must surely have resulted, at least in part, from his ever-dwindling influence in the enterprise that had once been his pride and joy.
