Description

Attempting to keep the nation together, “Old Rough and Ready” maintains his position as he runs for president in 1848

LS signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 8 x 9.75, January 18, 1848. Letter to David Paul Burns in Philadelphia. In full, “Your kind letter of the 2nd ult has been duly received. I beg leave to return to you my sincere acknowledgement for this expression of your friendly sentiments towards me and for the kind and prudent suggestions which you were pleased to offer. I most humbly assure you that I have no intentions at present of receding from or advancing beyond this position which I have long since taken in regards to this presidency.” In fact, Taylor differed with the Democrats over the concept of a strong national bank and opposed the extension of slavery into areas where neither cotton nor sugar could be grown. He also had problems with the Whigs' support of strong protective tariffs. Most importantly, he passionately opposed secession as a means of resolving the nation's problems. In fine condition, with several mailing folds, light mounting remnants to reverse of page and a bold signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
