LS signed “Z. Taylor,Btt Genl, U. S. A. Comd,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 9.75, June 17, 1839. Letter to General Alex Macob, Commanding General of the U. S. Army. In part, “The enemy has continued to commit murders…bodies were mutilated in a most horrible manner…probable that some of the parties who committed these outrages had not heard of the proposed conference at Fort King. Prospects of peace or an armistice are…unfavorable…until we ascertain whether or not the Indians will comply with the arrangements to be made by you at Fort King…I learn from him [Col. Harney]…that…a number of Indian Nickasakies and Seminoles who profess to be pleased with the treaty and would adhere to the stipulations…nothing yet has been heard from the Tallahassees…I see no other alternative than a renewal of active operations.” In fine condition, with a light shade of toning and some light show through from text on either side.
