Not quite the hustle and bustle of wartime! Sherman lays out his daily ritual: “Now my habit is to breakfast between 8 and 9, read the morning papers, and go to my office [in the] Army Building, corner of Houston and Green.”

ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” one lined page both sides, 5.5 x 9.25, November 27, 1887. Sherman writes to Raul Carpenter, apparently the son of a friend who is trying to set up a meeting with Sherman. In part, “You are a good deal younger than I for I am much older than your Father…Now my habit is to breakfast between 8 and 9, read the morning papers, and go to my office [in the] Army Building, corner of Houston and Green-ground floor-up to 12-uncertain til about 5, return when generally I am in my room 24 or room 25…by evenings am habitually out to a dinner party.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Sherman’s hand.
