Description

Extremely rare Vito Genevese signed document

After the Second World War, Genovese was brought back to the United States and charged with murder. However, the main witness against him, Peter La Tempa, was murdered while in protective custody and the authorities were forced to release him. After arranging the murder of several gang leaders, including Albert Anastasia in 1957, Genovese established himself as the most important criminal boss in the New York area. Vito Genovese died of a heart attack in the Springfield prison hospital, on February 14th, 1969. Extremely rare DS involving the Internal Revenue Service, one page, both sides, 8 x 10.5. An offer of compromise for failure to file a return or pay income taxes, not filled out, but signed at the bottom in black ink, 'Vito Genovese.' Genovese, like so many other gangsters of his era, had been investigated by the Treasury Department in an effort to jail him for nonpayment of taxes. In response to his attorney's advice, Genovese signed this 'Offer and Compromise' in blank in order to allow his attorney and/or accountant to negotiate a resolution with the government. Pursuant to this document, Genovese would admit to the violation, provide the IRS with an excuse and tender the settlement amount. Unfortunately for Genovese, he was not able to resolve the claims of the Treasury Department before his death and, as such, this signed document was filled in. Although unsigned documentation connected with Genovese has come to market, anything originally signed by this infamous gangster is extremely rare. Small area of paper loss to right edge and light toning, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
