Description

?Just imagine, yesterday one of the seats in the loge which you kindly had given us unfortunately gave way the very moment my brother in law, Paul, was about to sit down. Upon examining the seat, we discovered one of the legs was broken.?

French poet, dramatist and novelist best known for his novels Notre Dame de Paris and Les Miserables. ALS in French, one page both sides, 6.25 x 8, March 13. Letter to Mr. Duponchet, Director of the Opera. Hugo relates the embarrassment of an unfortunate accident which happened to his brother in law at the opera last night. In part, 'Just imagine, yesterday one of the seats in the loge which you kindly had given us unfortunately gave way the very moment my brother in law, Paul, was about to sit down. Upon examining the seat, we discovered one of the legs was broken. The question now is, was this condition one that existed prior to Paul's entrance into the loge. This is something, we cannot decide. And Paul will abide by whatever the owner of the loge decides. Paul has asked me to write you to let you know that he will be completely at the disposal of the owner of the loge for this small repair and for which he is ready if he judges Paul to be the cause of the accident.' Trivial soiling, small spot from seal and a couple light notations, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
