At the age of 16, Field writes his father, the Rev. D. D. Field, a pastor in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, regarding a trip to New Orleans on which a friend was embarking. In part: “I went with him to the ship which was at anchor in the harbor, in a Steamboat, & then went on board & sailed 12 or 13 miles with him, when I was obliged to return in the boat.” Reverse of the second integral page addressed in Field's own hand. In very good to fine condition, with several intersecting folds, small areas of paper separation, and light brushing to the signature.
