Description

"I guess the Marquis de Sade, Jean Genet and myself are the only writers banned in the French language"

ALS, two pages, 6.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, February 12, 1959. Letter to newspaper columnist Leonard Lyons, weighing in on the censorship of The Rosy Crucifixion. In part: "Had I known you were a friend of Leon Shamroy I would have been more explicit about that Paris publication. Here's the dope—'Sexus' (Book One) 'The Rosy Crucifixion.' Yes, it was banned in the French version‚—both a castrated edition and an unexpurgated one. Rather unusual. I'm sending Book Two ('Plexus') to my publisher now. The third book (Nexus) I have yet to write. It will be the longest and richest of the trilogy—maybe 1500 pages long. If I had extra copies of the banned books I would gladly send you them—but I don't. Can't hold on to them! However, if you really want any, try the Gotham Book Mart…If your mail from abroad isn't opened, send direct for them (they cost a song!)—Editions du Chene…What a farce it all is! I guess the Marquis de Sade, Jean Genet and myself are the only writers banned in the French language. Perhaps a distinction!" In fine condition.
