A perennial All-Star for the St. Louis Cardinals, Schoendienst was shipped off to the Giants in a mid-season trade that was deeply unpopular with the Cardinals fans and his best friend, Stan Musial. He would return to St. Louis to finish his career, and remained with the organization for decades as a coach, manager, and executive assistant.
