Description

Nicknamed 'Light-Horse Harry,' Lee (1756-1818) was a Revolutionary War hero who captured British posts in New York and in the South; he later served as governor of Virginia and as a US congressman, and was the father of Robert E. Lee. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15 x 12, February 25, 1793. Land grant issued to John Peden for "a certain Tract or parcel of land, containing three hundred and twenty eight acres." Boldly signed at the bottom by Lee as governor of Virginia. In very good to fine condition, with toning, heavier to the right side. The paper and wax seal is crisp and intact. Accompanied by an engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature. Six years later, Lee would deliver one of the most famous eulogies in history, poetically remembering George Washington before the two Houses of Congress with the now famous words, 'First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen.'
