Description

Extremely influential French chemist (1743-1794) noted for his discovery of the role oxygen plays in combustion; he was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution due to his involvement with the deeply unpopular Ferme Générale. LS in French, signed “Lavoisier,” one page, 6.5 x 8.25, September 7, 1780. Letter as a member of the Ferme Générale tax farming company, in part (translated): "Mr. Armet, sir, to whom you gave me the honor of writing to me, is registered for the post he applies for. There were a large number of candidates to place, who applied earlier than him, when he introduced himself. And since that date there were very few vacant positions. Because the company intends on passing a few reforms, the circumstances have become less favorable than ever for your protégé. Despite these obstacles I will not lose sight of him, but I fear that he will be obliged to wait for much longer." In fine condition.
