Description

President Taylor recognizes the appointment of a Portuguese consul

Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 15 x 12.75, January 4, 1850. Diplomatic commission in which President Taylor recognizes the appointment of Cezar Henrique Stuart de la Figaniere as "Consul general of the Portuguese Nation in the United States of America, to reside in New York." Signed at the conclusion by Taylor, and countersigned by Secretary of State John M. Clayton. Lower left retains original white paper seal. Double-matted and framed with a commemorative medallion and an engraved portrait to an overall size of 29 x 20. In very good to fine condition, with a bit of foxing, and some staining along one of the moderate intersecting folds; medallion within frame off-center but capable of being easily fixed. Given his short 16-month tenure in the White House, presidential autographs by Taylor are especially scarce.
