Released in 1939 and starring James Stewart, the Capra-directed Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was a box office success and propelled Stewart into stardom. The classic film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards—winning only for Best Original Story—and is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.
