American lawyer and politician (1815-1882) best known as the author of the best-selling 1840 nautical memoir Two Years Before the Mast. ALS signed “Rich. H. Dana, Jr.,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, March 20, 1861. Letter to a gentleman, in part: "I have just seen the printed bill. Section 4 is entirely different from that which I drew, & alters the principle & theory of the whole act." In fine condition, with light intersecting folds.
