ALS signed “George P,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 9, April 17, 1800. Letter to Lord Keith concerning the loss of his flagship the HMS Queen Charlotte, in part: "Many thanks my dear Lord Keith for your kind letter…Thank God you were not aboard the Royal Charlotte, then indeed it would have been a great calamity & though at a distance, I may venture to say that there is no one of all your friends who would have felt it more severely than myself. I trust this Letter to the care of the son of an old friend of mine, & one of the most respectable men in the whole world, a Mr. Smith, Son to Sir William Smith who is Colonel…therefore any attentions…you can shew this young man, I am sure you will." In fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from University Archives. HMS Queen Charlotte was operating as the flagship of Vice-Admiral Lord Keith when she caught fire while reconnoitering the island of Capraia on March 17, 1800; Keith was not aboard at the time and observed the disaster from shore. The crew was unable to extinguish the fire and the ship blew up, resulting in the loss of 673 officers and men.
