Description

Extraordinarily vivid copy of Verne's Keraban the Inflexible

Signed book: Voyages Extraordinaires Kéraban-le-têtu (in French). Paris: J. Hetzel. Hardcover, 7.25 x 11, 410 pages. Signed and inscribed, in French, on the first free end page (translated): "Offered for charity sponsored by the Countess of Paris. Jules Verne. June 1887." In good to very good condition, with separation along front hinge, mild toning and edge chipping to signed page, light toning and foxing to inside pages, partial separations to last few pages, as well as some light page warping and rippling. Cover exhibits overall wear, with surface loss to front cover, slight fraying to joint, as well as some mild sunning and fading.

Verne wrote this adventure novel in 1883, and the relationship between the author and his publisher developed into a mutually beneficial one. Hetzel substantially influenced Verne's writings, who in turn was so happy to find a willing publisher that he agreed to almost all changes that Hetzel suggested-perhaps the most notable one being the adoption of optimism in his novels. Verne, not an early enthusiast of technological or human progress, nevertheless agreed, and perhaps that spirit of good will prompted him to offer this specific example "for charity sponsored by the Countess of Paris." Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
