#715 - Eyvind Earle panoramic production background and production cels of Prince Philip, Samson, and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty Estimate: $20,000+

The climactic duel from Sleeping Beauty, with intense background artwork from Eyvind Earle

(Walt Disney Studios, 1959) Breathtaking original production cels and production panoramic background from the Oscar-nominated Disney classic Sleeping Beauty, which is highlighted by a panoramic production background hand-painted by Eyvind Earle. The heart-pounding scene shows Prince Philip and his trusty steed Samson poised to do battle with Maleficent, now transformed into an immense fire-breathing dragon. The Earle background is terrifically realized, capturing the mood and danger of the fateful encounter with a landscape fraught with jagged peaks, perilous drops, and noxious fog. The cels are trimmed and applied to a full pan cel, with the character images measuring 4.5 x 5 (Philip and Samson) and 9.75 x 9.5 (dragon); the background measures a tremendous 30 x 12. Double-matted to an overall size of 35 x 17. In fine condition. Accompanied by a copy of a letter from the offices of Earle, which, on the reverse, affirms that Earle did indeed paint the offered Sleeping Beauty background.

Disney artist Eyvind Earle was Sleeping Beauty's production designer, and Disney gave him a significant amount of freedom in designing the settings and selecting colors for the film. A completely painted Earle background is extremely rare as his time as a background painter was very limited. His stylistic influence is readily apparent throughout this feature film referred to by Walt Disney as the 'height of color.'
