Description

"The birth of NIKE sports shoes and the meteoric rise of the NIKE name to the vanguard of quality, innovation and performance"

Rare original circa 1972–1973 Nike promotional tri-fold investor relations brochure, entitled "The Year 1972 in Review," celebrating the company's remarkable first full year under the Nike name. The front panel reads: "It was the success story of 1972. The birth of NIKE sports shoes and the meteoric rise of the NIKE name to the vanguard of quality, innovation and performance in the sporting goods market. On the eve of the New Year, 1973, it is a time for accounting."

The illustrated brochure opens to reveal a month-by-month chronology of Nike's formative year, documenting the development and introduction of its earliest footwear, appearances at major sporting events, pioneering athlete endorsements, and the company's rapid commercial expansion.

A prominent red sales graph stretches across the lower portion, charting the company's dramatic growth from $0 to nearly $1.5 million throughout 1972, while numerous black-and-white photographs depict athletes competing in Nike footwear: one, used for Nike's first-ever advertising poster, shows Craig Virgin leading a group of American and Soviet runners during the 1972 USA–USSR Junior Invitational Track and Field Meet in Sacramento, California.

In very good to fine condition, with irregular toning to the front panel.
