Description

Scarce World War II-dated Yiddish-language war bond poster, 21.5 x 27.5, issued by the U.S. Treasury’s War Savings Staff in 1943. Boldly printed in color, the poster depicts the Statue of Liberty rising against a vivid blue-and-yellow sky, her torch blazing, above the slogan in Yiddish, “פאַר אַ בעסערן מאָרגן…” (For a better tomorrow…), and in English, “U.S. War Bonds.” The lower margin is printed “Yiddish” and “U.S. Government Printing Office: 1943 – O – 507841, WSS 743,” with a circled handwritten number, “20,” in the lower left corner. Archivally framed to a slightly larger size and in fine condition, with fold lines as issued.

To reach immigrant communities across America, the Treasury issued war bond posters in a range of foreign languages. For Yiddish-speaking Jewish Americans, many of whom had first glimpsed the Statue of Liberty from the decks of immigrant ships, this striking image carried particular resonance as news of Nazi persecution reached the United States. A powerful and uncommon piece of wartime home-front propaganda.
