Original British World War II poster, 19.75 x 29.75, June 1941, headed in red “Every Rivet a Bullet” above a dramatic black-and-white illustration of a ship’s hull towering over a shipyard slipway, flying the Union Jack and flanked by a crane and scaffolding as workers look on below. Signed in the image by the artist, “Lucas,” with the bold slogan “Speed the Ships” below. The lower border carries the print line “(F.365). Wt. 18115 15000. 6 41 Gp. 961. Fosh & Cross Ltd.” The reverse is stamped “British Information Services, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York City.” In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and wear to edges, including small tears and paper loss.
By 1941, German U-boats were sinking British merchant ships faster than they could be replaced, and posters like this one urged shipyard workers to see their labor as a direct contribution to the fight. The British Information Services stamp on the reverse ties this example to Britain’s official information office in the United States, which operated from Rockefeller Center in New York and distributed British wartime publications and posters to American audiences.
