Description

'Arrival in Hyannis'—Kennedy's personal photographer captures John and Jacqueline Kennedy on the tarmac during the 1960 presidential campaign year

Original vintage semi-glossy 14 x 11 silver gelatin photograph of John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy arriving in Hyannis, Massachusetts, standing alongside a uniformed police officer on the tarmac, taken by Jacques Lowe and printed in 1960, signed in the lower border in ink by the photographer, who signs again on the reverse, “1960, Jacques Lowe,” within a box marked “This Is a Vintage Print.” The reverse also bears Lowe's copyright stamp, a pencil notation, “Arrivel [sic] in Hyannis,” along with assorted archival numbering. In very good to fine condition, with light scattered creases and edgewear that includes short tears and adhesive remnants.

Born in Cologne, Germany, Jacques Lowe (1930–2001) became the Kennedy family's personal photographer in the late 1950s, after photographing Robert F. Kennedy on assignment. He followed John F. Kennedy throughout the 1960 campaign and, after declining the post of official White House photographer, continued to document the administration at the president's request, producing some of the most widely reproduced images of the Kennedys. Lowe's archive of some 40,000 negatives was later destroyed in a bank vault at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, making his vintage prints the surviving record of much of his work. The present print bears Lowe's stamp identifying it as a vintage print, dated 1960.
