Collection of over 200 glossy press photographs of John F. Kennedy, most 8 x 10 or 10 x 8, dating mostly from his 1960 presidential campaign through 1963 and apparently drawn from the photo files of The Detroit News. The majority are AP Wirephotos and UPI Telephotos with typed captions printed in the margin, with some also bearing editorial crop marks and retouching. The reverses bear agency credit stamps, many from UPI's office in the Detroit News Building; dated received stamps; and the paper's ink filing notations. Some retain affixed newspaper caption clippings, and others bear editors' notations, including size and slug stamps and a Detroit News staff photographer's stamp. Subjects include the John and Jackie Kennedy making their way through crowds to attend St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis during the 1960 campaign; a breakfast meeting with Eleanor Roosevelt as president-elect; the swearing-in and inaugural parade; the May 1961 state visit to Ottawa, including a dinner at the U.S. Embassy and the tree planting that aggravated his chronic back condition; the president and first lady greeting Nina Khrushchev at the Vienna summit; a Baltimore political rally; telephoning astronaut Gordon Cooper after his 22-orbit flight; and leisure moments sailing off Maine, golfing at Hyannis Port, riding in a golf cart with Jacqueline and Caroline, and watching the Army–Navy game. In overall very good to fine condition, with general wear from newsroom use, such as edgewear, creasing, and surface marks and stains.
