Two items pertaining to the challenging relationship between John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev:
- an original 8.5 x 14 White House press release, dated December 31, 1961, carrying an "exchange of messages between N. Khrushchev, chairman of the council of ministers of the USSR, L. Brezhnev, president of the presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, and President John F. Kennedy." In the first message, Khrushchev and Brezhnev offer their "sincerest wishes for peace and happiness in the New Year" to the people of the United States and the Kennedy family, noting: "There is no doubt that on the state of affairs in Soviet-American relations depends very much whether humanity will go towards peace or war…On the part of the Soviet Union, as before, there will be no lack of resolution to do everything in its power in order to ensure durable and lasting peace on our planet." Kennedy replies with similar good wishes, while noting: "The year which is ending has been a troubled one. It is my earnest hope that the coming year will strengthen the foundations of world peace and will bring an improvement in the relations between our countries, upon which so much depends. It is our grave responsibility to fulfill that hope."
- an original 8.5 x 5 teletype segment carrying Khrushchev's statement on JFK's death, in part: "Khrushchev referred to Kennedy as 'a person of broad outlook who realistically assessed the situation and tried to find ways for negotiated settlement of the international problems which now divide the world.' 'The Soviet government and the Soviet people share the deep grief of the American people over this great loss and express the hope that the search for settling the disputable issues, a search to which President J. F. Kennedy made a tangible contribution, would be continued in the interests of peace, for the benefit of mankind.'"
In overall fine condition.
