Description

World War II-dated original printed naval communications diagram headed “Top Secret” and titled “TF 51 Amphibious Landing Control Communication Channels,” 13.75 x 10.5, dated February 10, 1945. Prepared for use with ‘Com Phibs Pac Op Plan A1-45, Appendix 1 to Annex C,’ the diagram charts communications linking the Joint Expeditionary Force and Expeditionary Troops with the northern and southern attack forces, amphibious support force, and gunfire and covering force. Additional branches identify support carriers, minesweepers, underwater demolition teams, transport screening, and other specialized groups. A detailed table lists radio circuits, frequencies, and channel numbers for ship-to-shore administration, boat control, and landing force communications. One frequency has been corrected by hand in both the diagram and table. The lower margin bears the printed notation “Eldorado, 83F, 2-10-45.” In fine condition, with a vertical fold and light creasing to the left side.

Operation Plan A1-45 covered the capture, occupation, and defense of Okinawa by forces under Vice Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner. Task Force 51 conducted the principal landings on April 1, 1945. Turner’s flagship, USS Eldorado, also embarked Lieutenant General Simon B. Buckner, Jr., commander of the Tenth Army, placing the naval and ground commanders aboard the same amphibious command ship during the landing phase.
