Description

Early Hingham, Massachusetts, settler (1652–1732) and member of the prominent Lincoln family, the son of Samuel Lincoln, the English immigrant regarded as the progenitor of President Abraham Lincoln’s American line. A planter and soldier in King Philip’s War, Daniel Lincoln was the brother of Mordecai Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s third great-grandfather, making Daniel the future president’s third great-uncle. Early American manuscript DS, signed “Daniel Lincoln,” one page, 12.5 x 14.5, February 2, 1684. A Hingham, Massachusetts Bay Colony, land deed in which Daniel Lincoln, identified as the son of Samuel Lincoln, Senior, and his wife Elizabeth, sells to John Hersey their dwelling house and five-acre lot in Hingham, land originally granted by the town to Thomas Lincoln, weaver, and subsequently left by him to Daniel Lincoln. Signed at the conclusion by Daniel Lincoln, with Elizabeth Lincoln signing by her “E” mark. Also signed as witnesses by Samuel Bates and Lieutenant John Chubbuck. Several red wax seals remain affixed to the document. A memorandum on the reverse records that possession of the house and lands was delivered to John Hersey on the same date. In very good to fine condition, with overall light toning and edgewear, some small areas of paper loss, and the lower horizontal fold reinforced with tape.
