Space Shuttle-era left-handed 4000 Series glove restraint and bladder manufactured by ILC Dover. The white fabric restraint assembly features articulated fingers with tan fingertips, an adjustable cord system with blue metal locking fittings, wrist restraints, and attachment points around the cuff. The ILC Dover tag identifies the restraint as a “Restraint Assembly, Glove Hybrid,” Part No. 0106-88936-01, Serial No. 002, Size 07 (ZG), Code ID 74897, manufactured 8/86. An additional ILC Dover tag attached below the palm reads: “Glove Asy, Hybrid, Left, Part No. 0106-19010-03,” with Serial No. 4002, Size 07 (ZG), dated 2/87, under NASA contract NAS9-15150. Complete with its internal green urethane pressure bladder, annotated inside the wrist, “P/N 0106-88971-01, Size 072G, S/N 004.” In fine condition, with light overall wear. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from ILC historian Bill Ayrey.
Development of the 4000 Series glove began during the Space Shuttle era as an effort to improve fit, mobility, and dexterity while reducing bunching of the pressure bladder. The restraint incorporated an adjustable system of cords running along the fingers, allowing the glove to be more closely fitted to an astronaut’s hand. The design represented an intermediate stage in the continuing development of Shuttle EVA gloves that ultimately led to the later Phase VI configuration.
