Written by Rod Serling and directed by John Frankenheimer, the unflinching drama about racial injustice also earned Emmy nominations for Serling's writing and Frankenheimer's direction, but at the 11th Primetime Emmy Awards, held May 6, 1959, at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, Steiger ultimately lost to Fred Astaire, who won for An Evening with Fred Astaire on NBC.
