Dutch-language biography of Abraham Lincoln, “Levensgeschiedenis van Abraham Lincoln,” 89 pages, 5.25 x 7.75, published in Amsterdam by Jan Leendertz in 1865. The original printed wrappers are retained, with the front wrapper prominently featuring an engraved portrait of Lincoln within an ornamental border. The title page gives the fuller title “Abraham Lincoln geschetst in zijn leven en daden” and identifies the work as translated from the English of G. W. Bacon. The biography traces Lincoln from his ancestry and frontier upbringing through his political career, presidency, the Civil War, and his assassination, concluding with the official report of his death sent to the American minister in London. In very good to fine condition, with edgewear to the wrappers, including rubbing, paper loss, and light creasing, and some paper loss to the spine.
Published in the Netherlands in the year of Lincoln's assassination, the book reflects the rapid international response to his death. Its Dutch preface observes that only a few years earlier Lincoln's name had been almost unknown throughout Europe, but was now on everyone's lips, and explains that the biography was translated both as an example for young readers and as a tribute to Lincoln and his deeds. The edition was recognized in early Lincolniana collecting: a catalogue of the noted Charles B. Reed collection specifically records the 1865 Jan Leendertz edition in wrappers with a portrait of Lincoln on the front cover.
