Microfilm of John Gillespie Magee Jr.’s poem ‘High Flight,’ attested as flown into lunar orbit in the PPK of LMP Jim Irwin during the Apollo 15 mission by his widow, Mary Irwin-Vickers, who states on an included letter of provenance: “This letter is to verify that the enclosed microfilm of the High Flight poem was flown to the moon on Apollo 15 by Astronaut James B. Irwin in 1971. This item has been part of the Irwin estate since its return from the moon and it has been in my possession ever since. The microfilm is also listed on the PPK (Personal Preference Kit) list 1177, item number 3 (‘microfilm-Dottie Buxton’). A printed copy of what is on the microfilm has also been included in this lot.” The microfilm measures .5˝ x .5˝ and is accompanied by a copy of Irwin’s PPK list, which identifies item No. 3 as four microfilms associated with Dottie Buxton. Also included are a printed copy of ‘High Flight,’ an embroidered Apollo 15 mission patch, and a NASA lithograph of Irwin on the lunar surface. The items are archivally matted and framed together to an overall size of 25.5 x 21.25. In fine condition, with some wear to the frame.
