From the personal collection of legendary music producer Richard Perry, his 1960 Martin 00-18G acoustic guitar, serial no. 176737, reportedly played by his circle of musical friends during intimate late-night gatherings at his Los Angeles home, including Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Harry Dean Stanton, and others. As the evening stretched on, the guitar was often played in dialogue with the piano, frequently with Elton John or Herbie Hancock at the keys, creating spontaneous collaborations among some of the most influential musicians of the modern era. The guitar exhibits extensive playwear throughout, including scattered scratches, dings, finish wear, and handling marks commensurate with decades of use. Accompanied by a hardshell carrying case and an Abell Certificate of Authenticity documenting its provenance.
Richard Perry ranks among the most accomplished record producers of the rock era, helping shape the careers and recordings of an extraordinary range of artists from the late 1960s onward. Working across rock, pop, soul, and singer-songwriter genres, he produced landmark albums and hit records for Harry Nilsson, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, Art Garfunkel, the Pointer Sisters, Leo Sayer, and many others. Admired for his musical instincts and collaborative approach, Perry forged enduring friendships with many of the artists he worked alongside, becoming one of the music industry's most trusted and influential creative partners.
Those friendships extended well beyond the recording studio, making Perry's West Hollywood home a celebrated gathering place throughout the 1970s and beyond. As Rod Stewart later recalled, it was ‘the scene of much late-night skulduggery…a place you knew you could always fall into at the end of an evening for a full-blown knees-up with drink and music and dancing.’ It was within this creative atmosphere that many of rock's greatest musicians informally gathered, socialized, and made music together, giving this Martin guitar an exceptional provenance rooted in one of popular music's most remarkable circles of friendship and collaboration.
