Large green-striped three-cushion sofa used by James Dean in his rented Hollywood Hills residence in the early 1950s. Measuring approximately 93″ wide, 38″ deep, and 34″ high, the sofa features a gently curved back, rolled arms, three loose seat cushions, a pleated ruffled skirt, and carved wooden feet concealed beneath its fitted green slipcover. Its distinctive form and upholstery correspond to the couch visible in period photographs of Dean relaxing and playing bongos inside the apartment.
Accompanied by a provenance letter from the woman whose family owned the Hollywood Hills property where Dean rented a furnished garage apartment in the early 1950s. She notes: "This couch was one of the furnishings in James Dean's garage apartment and there were many clear photos taken of Dean playing bongo drums, playing chess and relaxing on the couch during his time there. The garage apartment was never rented out again and this couch has remained on the premises ever since the 1950s."
In very good condition, with substantial age-related wear, including fading and discoloration, scattered soiling and small stains, wear to the skirt and piping, and a prominent tear to the upholstery at one arm. A compelling artifact of Dean's personal environment, offering a rare window into the domestic life of one of Hollywood's most enduring icons.
