Description

Original glossy 3.25 x 5.25 deckle-edge photograph of Mae Capone, wife of Al Capone, captured in a rare candid moment of laughter while seated on a balcony at the Capone family's Palm Island estate in Miami Beach, Florida. The photo bears the period caption "Miami Beach, Fla. July 1940" in the lower border, with the reverse retaining a photo finisher's certification stamp dated July 23, 1940. In fine condition. Originates from the personal photo album of Dorothy Pucci Capone, who was married to Albert Capone, Al Capone's younger brother.

Few surviving images of Mae Capone reveal much of her personality, making this unusually warm and spontaneous photograph especially compelling. Married to America's most infamous gangster in 1918, Mae endured decades marked by Al Capone's criminal career, repeated infidelities, imprisonment, and declining health, yet remained steadfastly devoted to her husband until his death in 1947. Believed to be the only known photograph capturing Mae laughing, this intimate family snapshot offers an exceptionally human glimpse of one of organized crime's most private and enigmatic figures.
