Description

American Mafia boss (1907–1997) who served as the longtime head of the Chicago Outfit during the 1970s and 1980s, overseeing one of the nation's most powerful organized crime syndicates while later being convicted in the Las Vegas 'Operation Strawman' skimming case. Original color 5 x 4 FBI diptych mug shot photograph of Chicago Outfit boss Joey Aiuppa, depicting front and profile images of Aiuppa posed before an FBI-Chicago identification placard reading: "APR 2 1980" and "73." In fine condition.

On April 2, 1980, the FBI photographed Joey Aiuppa during an investigation into the Chicago Outfit's criminal activities, producing the front-and-profile mug shot offered here. By that time, Aiuppa had become the acknowledged leader of the Outfit, having succeeded Felix 'Milwaukee Phil' Alderisio following Alderisio's imprisonment in 1971, and presided over the organization during a period of intensive federal investigations into its Las Vegas casino skimming operations. In 1986, Aiuppa was convicted in the landmark 'Operation Strawman' case and sentenced to federal prison for his role in the conspiracy.
