Original glossy 4.25 x 2.75 New York Police Department diptych mug shot photograph of noted confidence man Daniel ‘Dapper Dan’ Collins, mounted to its original 5 x 3.25 police identification card. The reverse bears extensive contemporary handwritten identification notes, including the inscription "Don Collins 'Dapper Don,'" physical descriptors, references to known associates, including Count Victor Lustig, and a New York City police reference number ("NYC #21308"). In very good to fine condition, with overall crazing. According to the consignor, the card was acquired from the estate of a former FBI agent.
Arthur ‘Dapper Dan’ Collins, known contemporaneously as ‘Dapper Don,’ was the principal accomplice of legendary confidence man Count Victor Lustig, assisting in many of his most audacious frauds, including the infamous 1925 scheme in which Lustig twice ‘sold’ the Eiffel Tower to unsuspecting scrap-metal dealers in Paris. Collins helped stage the elaborate deception by posing as a government official's associate and later participated in other high-profile confidence schemes alongside Lustig.
