Arrested on November 25, 1930, this mug shot captures Willie Sutton at a pivotal moment in his criminal career. The arrest followed his daring October 28, 1930 robbery of Manhattan's J. Rosenthal & Sons jewelry store, where Sutton posed as a Western Union messenger to gain entry before making off with approximately $129,000 in jewels. Already on parole, Sutton's arrest ultimately resulted in his recommitment to prison and a 30-year sentence, from which he would stage the first of several spectacular escapes. Over the following decades, his meticulously planned robberies, ingenious disguises, and repeated prison breaks earned him the nicknames Willie the Actor and Slick Willie, securing his place as America's most celebrated bank robber of the twentieth century.
