Description

Original glossy 5 x 2.75 silver gelatin New York Police Department diptych mug shot of future Mafia boss Albert Anastasia following his October 21, 1936, arrest on a vagrancy charge. The reverse retains its original New York City Police Department booking card, completed in manuscript with booking number B57939, listing Officer O'Connor as the arresting officer, Anastasia's residence as 387 Clinton Street, occupation as "Salesman," birthplace as Italy, and physical characteristics, including his height (5'9"), weight (202 pounds), and dark hair. In very good to fine condition, with a paperclip impression and staple holes to the right edge, trimmed edges, and light creasing.

Albert Anastasia rose to prominence as one of the principal leaders of the infamous Murder, Inc. enforcement arm of organized crime before succeeding Vincent Mangano as boss of New York's Mangano crime family in 1951. Following Anastasia's assassination in the Park Sheraton Hotel barber shop on October 25, 1957, the organization passed to Carlo Gambino and became known as the Gambino crime family. Arrest-era NYPD mug shots of Anastasia are exceptionally scarce.
