Original vintage pearl-finish 10.25 x 8 Associated Press news photograph depicting notorious New York gangster Vincent ‘Mad Dog’ Coll, shown with dyed black hair and a mustache in a failed attempt to disguise himself following an extensive manhunt, and four of his associates at a police station following their October 4, 1931, arrest. Pictured left to right are Dominick Adierno, Michael Basile, Pasquale Del Greco, Frank Giordano, and Coll. An Associated Press caption affixed to the reverse identifies Coll and Giordano as two of the four men accused of spraying a Harlem street with shotgun fire during the previous summer, killing one child and wounding four others. The reverse also bears editorial markings and an Associated Press credit stamp marked “American, Must Not Use.” In very good to fine condition, with light surface wear, and small tears and impressions to the borders/edges.
Vincent ‘Mad Dog’ Coll emerged as one of New York City's most feared gangsters during the early 1930s, earning notoriety for his violent feud with Dutch Schultz and other rival bootlegging organizations. His nickname became synonymous with ruthless brutality after the July 28, 1931, Harlem drive-by shooting intended to kill a rival instead struck a group of children, killing five-year-old Michael Vengalli and wounding four others. Captured only weeks later, Coll and several members of his gang appear here smiling in custody despite the sensational accusations that had made national headlines.
