Description

“These polaroids were exhibited in the museum exhibition David Bowie Is”—three original Polaroids of David Bowie taken by Grammy Award-winning art director Mick Haggerty in preparation for the artwork of Bowie's 1984 album Tonight

Three original color glossy 3.5 x 4.25 Polaroid photographs of David Bowie, taken in his suite at New York City's Carlyle Hotel in 1984 by Grammy Award-winning art director Mick Haggerty in preparation for the artwork of Bowie's album Tonight. The images depict the shirtless singer in a head-and-shoulders portrait wearing a cross necklace and staring into the camera, and in two half-length poses looking away from the camera: one with his arms folded across his chest, and the other with his arms extended as he gazes into the distance. Each is signed on the reverse in black ink by Haggerty. In overall fine condition, with some light soiling to the arms folded image.

Accompanied by two signed letters of authenticity, one from Jeff Gold, the owner of Recordmecca and a former executive vice president/general manager of Warner Bros. Records, and one from Haggerty, who writes: “This letter is to authenticate three reference polaroid photographs of David Bowie that I took in his room at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City in 1984, in preparation for creating the album cover for Bowie’s album Tonight. I art directed and designed the artwork for David’s albums Let’s Dance, Tonight, and Never Let Me Down, as well as the singles from those albums. These polaroids were exhibited in the museum exhibition David Bowie Is.”

Grammy Award-winning art director Mick Haggerty collaborated closely with David Bowie during one of the most commercially successful periods of the musician's career, creating the artwork for Let's Dance (1983), Tonight (1984), and Never Let Me Down (1987). To develop the cover for Tonight, Haggerty photographed Bowie in his suite at New York City's Carlyle Hotel, taking 29 original Polaroid reference photographs from which he ultimately selected one as the basis for the finished portrait used on the album cover. The three Polaroids offered here are unused reference photographs from that session, retained by Haggerty and later exhibited in the landmark David Bowie Is museum exhibition, organized by London's Victoria & Albert Museum.
