Remarkable run of 11 issues of Jazz News and Jazz News & Review dating from May 2, 1962, to January 9, 1963, chronicling the earliest documented history of the Rolling Stones in real time. Spanning the band's formative months, the collection traces its evolution from Brian Jones's landmark May 1962 classified advertisement seeking musicians, through Mick Jagger's earliest published mentions, the announcement of the group's formation and first performance, and its rapid emergence as a fixture of London's burgeoning rhythm-and-blues scene by early 1963. Contemporary news articles, club diary listings, and advertisements preserved throughout the magazines provide an extraordinary week-by-week record of the band's earliest history. The contents of the individual issues are as follows:
- May 2, 1962 (pg. 15): This landmark issue contains Brian Jones's now-famous classified advertisement seeking musicians to form a new rhythm-and-blues group, a notice widely regarded as documenting the genesis of the Rolling Stones. The advertisement reads: "Rhythm and Blues / Guitarist and vocalist forming R. & B. band, require harmonica and/or tenor sax, piano, bass, and drums. Must be keen to rehearse. Plenty of interesting work available. Box No. 1277." The front cover features Annie Ross and the headline, “Jazzmen in Obscurity.”
- May 30, 1962 (pg. 3): This issue contains an exceptionally early printed mention of Mick Jagger, who is identified as a possible vocalist for Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated in a page three news item announcing the group's upcoming June 8th recording session at Decca Studios. Although Long John Baldry ultimately sang on the resulting album, R&B from the Marquee (released in November 1962), the article captures Jagger's involvement in the London rhythm-and-blues scene just weeks before the formation of the Rolling Stones. The front cover features Erroll Garner and the headline, "Piano Special."
- July 11, 1962 (pgs. 3 and 15): Published on the eve of the Rolling Stones' debut performance at London's Marquee Club, this issue contains the first announcement of the newly formed band in a page three article, "Mick Jagger Forms Group," identifying the lineup as Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Elmo Lewis (Brian Jones), Dick Taylor, Ian "Stu" Stewart, and Mick Avory, and quoting Jagger: "I hope they don't think we're a rock 'n' roll outfit." The issue also includes a Marquee Club advertisement promoting the July 12, 1962 performance, recognized as the Rolling Stones' first official concert. The front cover features Margaret Tynes, star of Dark Pilgrimage.

- November 14, 1962 (pg. 15): This issue mentions the Rolling Stones in its "Rhythm and Blues" column as the group gained momentum through its regular club appearances. The front cover features Mr. Acker Bilk alongside headlines including "Gene Wright," "Jazz in Poland," and "BBC-40 Today."
- November 21, 1962 (pg. 14): This issue continues Jazz News & Review's coverage of the London rhythm-and-blues scene, including the Rolling Stones in its regular "R. & B." section. The front cover features Cleo Laine alongside headlines including "The Village Gate, N.Y." and "Johnny St. Cyr."
- December 27, 1962 (pg. 9): This year-end issue includes a contemporary club diary listing announcing the Rollin' Stones as the following week's rhythm-and-blues attraction at the Red Lion, Sutton, documenting one of the band's earliest regular club engagements. The front cover features an illustrated portrait of John Lewis alongside headlines including "The Golden Decade" and "New Orleans Greats."
- January 2, 1963 (pg. 15): This New Year's issue includes a contemporary Marquee Club advertisement promoting its 1963 rhythm-and-blues program, noting that "Guests include visiting R & B groups and THE ROLLIN' STONES group.” The front cover features Annie Ross, noted as appearing in Three at Nine, alongside headlines including "Mingus," "Hodges," "Schifrin," and "A Happy New Year to You All."
- January 9, 1963 (pgs. 7, 9, 14, and 17): This exceptional issue contains four contemporary references to the Rolling Stones, including a large advertisement promoting "The Rolling Stones" as London's authentic rhythm-and-blues sound, a Marquee Club advertisement billing "Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones" for the club's Thursday R&B nights alongside Long John Baldry, a news item noting that the Marquee would now feature Cyril Davies' All-Stars and the Rolling Stones on Thursday evenings, and a club diary listing for the band's engagement at the Red Lion, Sutton. The front cover features Chris Barber, Ottilie Patterson, and Louis Jordan, with headlines including "Jordan/Barber Review" and "JJ & Kai."
In overall very good to fine condition, with expected age toning, light to moderate edgewear, occasional staining, and a few pencil notations to the covers; several covers are nearly detached. The May 2, 1962 issue has a detached front cover (present); and the January 9, 1963 issue has one detached interior page (present).
