Distinguished from standard retail examples by the laser-engraved "AppleCare Service" designation on its aluminum rear housing, the phone also bears an unusual serial number, featuring an uncommon "5K" prefix, widely associated by collectors with Apple warranty replacement units, and ending in "YEN" rather than the retail 8GB suffix "WH8." The accompanying plain white two-piece AppleCare Service box, emblazoned only with the red "iPhone AppleCare Service" logo, was produced for Apple's service operations rather than consumer retail display. These specialized service units are not known to have been factory sealed. In fine cosmetic condition, with light scratches and handling wear; the phone is not currently operational.
Apple's current loaner program documents a service model in which temporary service phones remain company property throughout the repair process, while customers whose devices prove beyond repair receive replacement units instead. This 2007 AppleCare Service iPhone is consistent with that longstanding practice and is believed to have remained within Apple's service network rather than entering ordinary retail distribution. Consequently, surviving examples are believed to be exceptionally scarce. The consignor estimates that fewer than 30 complete phone-and-box sets survive worldwide and further notes that, despite extensive searching, they have identified only two previous marketplace appearances of comparable AppleCare Service iPhones. Representing a little-known aspect of the original iPhone's history, this service model offers an extraordinary glimpse into the service infrastructure behind Apple's most revolutionary product.
