Description

(Walt Disney Studios, 1938) Original production cels featuring Ferdinand and the matador from Ferdinand the Bull, showing the titular bull gleefully smelling a bouquet as the frustrated matador marches over with his cape. The cels have been trimmed and applied to a hand-painted woodgrain background as prepared by Courvoisier Galleries for sale. The Ferdinand image measures 5 x 5.5, and the matador image measures 3.5 x 5.5, with a mat opening of 9.25 x 9. Matted and framed to an overall size of 16.25 x 17; the original mat is entitled, “Ferdinand.” The reverse bears a 1938 Walt Disney Productions label, indicating that “This is an original painting on celluloid actually used in the Walt Disney Production of Ferdinand the Bull. It is one of a select few that have been released to art collectors. The remainder have been destroyed.” In very good to fine condition, with horizontal splits through the matador’s right leg and through Ferdinand’s left horn. This classic early Disney cartoon won the 1938 Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons); interestingly, the matador was a caricature of Walt Disney himself.
