Description

Mary Blair in Wonderland—fantastical concept painting of Alice in 'The Garden of Live Flowers'

(Walt Disney Studios, 1951) Original concept painting by Mary Blair for Alice in Wonderland, which depicts the shrunken Alice encountering oversized talking flowers in ‘The Garden of Live Flowers.’ Accomplished in tempera on an 8.5 x 8.5 illustration board, the fanciful scene beautifully portrays a diminutive Alice gazing up at a trio of tiger lilies and a pair of snapdragons looming above her, with oversized pink mushrooms and dense stylized foliage heightening the dreamlike atmosphere. Rendered in Blair's bold modernist style, the composition bursts with vivid color, simplified forms, and playful character designs that neatly capture the imaginative spirit of Lewis Carroll's fantastical world. In fine condition, with tack holes to corners.

Blair was a concept artist for Disney during the 1940s and early 1950s, working on designs for such films as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. She also created designs for several Disney attractions (including It's a Small World) and, her largest work ever, the multi-story mosaic in Disney World's Contemporary Hotel concourse.
