Description

Factory-sealed Apple Macintosh External Disk Drive (M0130) in its original retail box. Introduced alongside the original Macintosh in 1984, the single-sided 400K external floppy disk drive connected to the Macintosh 128K's external floppy port, effectively doubling removable storage capacity and making it practical to swap between the System disk and application or data disks without constantly ejecting media. The unopened package remains sealed in its original Apple retail box, 11˝ x 9.25˝ x 6.5˝, and features the solid red Apple logo and the stylized Picasso-inspired Macintosh artwork depicting the external disk drive. In fine condition, with some wear to the box.

Announced alongside the original Macintosh in January 1984 and first shipped in May of that year, the Macintosh External Disk Drive addressed one of the earliest limitations of Apple's groundbreaking graphical personal computer. While the Macintosh 128K included a single internal 400K Sony 3.5-inch floppy drive and no hard disk, the addition of an external drive allowed users to keep both a system disk and an application or data disk mounted simultaneously, greatly improving everyday use of software such as MacWrite and MacPaint. Original factory-sealed examples have become increasingly elusive, particularly with their retail packaging intact, making them highly desirable artifacts from the earliest days of the Macintosh platform.
