The computer's underside bears an affixed Apple Computer label identifying it as a 256K example, serial number A3S2-6441, assembled in the U.S.A., with rear-panel connections for printer, monitor, disk drives, serial peripherals, audio, and expansion cards. Apple III Plus features include a 256K memory configuration, built-in 5.25-inch floppy disk drive, full-size keyboard with numeric keypad (the space bar bears an affixed “256K” label), 80-column display capability, Apple II compatibility, and multiple internal expansion slots. The accompanying Apple Monitor III (Model A3M0039, serial number B3J410942) retains its original October 1983 manufacturer's label and includes its original cardboard box. Accompanied by original Apple III Plus documentation and software, including the Owner's Guide, Addendum to the Standard Device Drivers Manual, Apple III Plus Accessory Kit packing list, Monitor III packing list, Expansion Disk Drive installation instructions, product registration and warranty materials, software license documents, Apple User Input Report forms, Apple Writer III and VisiCalc III program diskettes, System Utilities software, and additional original Apple III paperwork. Introduced in December 1983, the Apple III Plus represented Apple's final effort to establish the Apple III as a successful business computer. Originally released in late 1980 as the intended successor to the Apple II, the Apple III was plagued by serious reliability problems that prompted the recall of approximately 14,000 early machines and permanently damaged its reputation. The Apple III Plus incorporated hardware refinements intended to address many of those early issues, but arrived just weeks before the debut of the Macintosh in January 1984, which quickly shifted Apple's focus to a new generation of personal computing. The original Apple III was discontinued in April 1984, followed by the Apple III Plus in September 1985. Reflecting on the project's struggles, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak later attributed much of the system's failure to a design process driven more by marketing than engineering.
